Faces are the ledgers of our experience.

– Richard Avedon

What’s in a face, behind a smile or a certain look, between the lines and the angles, beyond the passage of time?

Comparing Walker Evans with Eugene Atget, American poet William Carlos Williams said, “We see what we have not heretofore realized, ourselves made worthy in our anonymity.” Motivated by the belief that no one is beneath portraiture and nourished by plentiful serendipitous encounters in her travels to over 110 countries, photographer Jennifer Chan shares her documentary portraits in this series called Faces.
